What is Anxiety?
Axiety comes from the Latin word anxius, which means a condition of agitation and distress. What is this agitation and distress about? More simply defined, anxiety is and uneasy anticipation about the future. The future may be any time that isn't here yet: 5 minutes or 5 years from now. Why would we be worried about the future? The answer in the simplest terms is that anxiety is our body's warning signal for DANGER.
Anxiety ...
- is a reaction to a perceived threat.
- involves all our senses.
- triggers our body's "fight or flight" response.
What is a Panic Attack?
A panic attack is an intense period of fear and physical symptoms that seem to "come out of the blue." The symptoms reach a peak within about 10-15 minutes. Some people report having multiple attacks, or feeling a hiigh level of anxiety for a long time afterward. Some people feel physically and mentally exhausted after a panic attack. Panic attacks inclue at least four of the following symptoms (some people report experiencing more, some less):
- Pounding heart or chest pain
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking
- Shortness of breath
- Choking sensation
- Nausea, abdominal pain, or actual vomiting
- Sense of feeling "unreal" or depersonalization

|
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Chills or hot flashes
- Blurred vision or fear of losing vision
- Fear of losing control or "going crazy"
- Fear of dying
- Fear of being trapped
